Ownership

Ownership means having clear accountability for an outcome or system across its lifecycle, not merely writing its initial code. Owners understand users, operational health, risks, dependencies, decisions, maintenance, and eventual replacement or retirement.

Healthy ownership

Healthy ownership gives a team authority and resources proportional to its responsibilities. It uses documentation, on-call practices, service objectives, roadmaps, and explicit escalation paths so accountability does not depend on one person’s memory.

Ownership is not blame. Shared systems still require collaboration, and leaders should avoid “you build it, you run it” expectations without staffing, training, observability, and sustainable operational support.
