Trade-off
A decision in which improving one desirable property requires accepting cost or weakness in another.
Trade-off
A Trade-off exists when a decision improves one property while accepting a cost in another. Engineering choices commonly balance simplicity, performance, reliability, security, delivery speed, flexibility, operating cost, and team cognitive load.
Making trade-offs explicit
A useful decision names the objective, constraints, alternatives, evidence, expected benefits, accepted disadvantages, and conditions that would justify revisiting it. The correct choice depends on context; “best practice” without constraints often hides the actual trade-off.
Trade-offs differ from mistakes. A mistake overlooks relevant information or violates an understood requirement. A deliberate trade-off knowingly accepts a downside because another outcome matters more under current constraints.
