Network Monitoring
Observing network availability, traffic, latency, errors, saturation, and device health to detect and diagnose problems.
Network monitoring measures whether network paths and devices are available, healthy, and performing as expected. It combines active checks, device telemetry, flow records, logs, and packet-level investigation.
Signals
Typical signals include latency, packet loss, retransmissions, interface errors, bandwidth utilization, queueing, routing changes, DNS failures, and device resource saturation. Synthetic probes reveal end-to-end reachability, while device and flow telemetry help locate the failing segment.
Operational use
Alerts should represent user-impacting conditions or actionable risk rather than every transient change. Dashboards should make it possible to move from a service symptom to the relevant path, interface, route, or dependency. Baselines are important because normal traffic patterns vary by site, workload, and time of day.
Network monitoring is most effective when it is connected to incident response, capacity planning, and configuration history.
