RICE Scoring

A prioritization framework that compares initiatives using reach, impact, confidence, and effort.

RICE Scoring

RICE Scoring compares initiatives using four inputs:

  • Reach: how many users, customers, transactions, or accounts will be affected during a defined period.
  • Impact: the expected degree of improvement for each affected unit.
  • Confidence: how strong the evidence is behind the reach and impact estimates.
  • Effort: the estimated engineering, design, product, research, and operational work required.

A common formulation is:

RICE score = (Reach × Impact × Confidence) ÷ Effort

Why it helps

RICE makes assumptions visible and gives teams a consistent starting point for comparing unlike opportunities.

Limitations

The output is only as reliable as its inputs. It should not override strategy, mandatory risk work, legal obligations, architectural sequencing, or qualitative judgment. Teams should record assumptions, use consistent scales, and revisit estimates as evidence changes.
