Backlog Refinement

The recurring activity of clarifying, splitting, estimating, and ordering upcoming product backlog items.

Backlog Refinement

Backlog refinement is the recurring collaboration used to prepare likely upcoming work. Teams clarify intent, identify dependencies, split oversized items, discuss risks, add acceptance criteria, and adjust ordering.

Purpose

Refinement reduces avoidable uncertainty before sprint planning. It is not a promise that every refined item will be delivered.

Common mistakes

  • Turning refinement into a long status meeting.
  • Estimating work before the outcome and boundaries are understood.
  • Refining too far into the future, when assumptions are likely to change.
